A famous political theorist once noted that life without government would be “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.” In this course, we will discuss American politics – from its roots in democracy to the American political process and the institutions and actors that play a part in it. However, it is not simply a course about formal institutions and office holders. We will also look at the role of citizens – as individuals, as members of political parties and interest groups, and as consumers of the media. We’ll study the structures and the processes of governance – paying attention to how the American political system decides: “who gets what, when, & how.”
